A Little Info About Us

The SDQSG is a Not-for-profit organization formed in 1975 by a group of quilters and stitchers with the following goals:
  • to provide a forum for quilters and needleworkers to meet and exchange ideas
  • to work on community projects
  • to form a vehicle to bring in qualified experts for seminars and workshops
  • to put on the best quilt and stitchery show possible every three years

The Guild meets every Tuesday evening (September to April) at 7pm at the Parkside Center on Durham St. Membership is $30 per year, and includes access to weekly, weekend and year end workshops. Our library of books and trade publications is extensive, and we regularly work on community projects through our Cuddle Quilt Program. Members also receive our monthly newsletter.

We welcome professional members, as well as beginners to the field. What began as a social group thirty five years ago has evolved into a venue for education and inspiration embracing all of the fibre arts. For more information, visit our website at Sudbury & District Quiltting & Stitchery Guild or email us at SDQSG

We spent 29 years at St Alberts School on Eyre street before it closed. The next year we met at the Serbian Club on Bloor St before moving into the hall at the Parkside Center in the YMCA on Durham St.
We have nicely spaced tables that can seat 6-8 or more. Having tables for everyone to sit at has really encouraged a lot more people to bring projects to work on at guild and has really increased socializing. Now, not nearly as many people are heading out the door as soon as the business part of the meeting and show & tell are done.
One other advantage to the new venue is AIR-CONDITIONING!!! What a pleasant relief!

Sharon Bourque is the 2010-11 editor of the guild newsletter. Any information that you would like to see in the newsletter can be given to Sharon at the guild meetings, or sent to her by email. You may also email the guild at SQGSguild@gmail.com

Each meeting consists of an address by the president, and any other speakers,a show and brag, coffee break and then a workshop. Every week the workshop differs, sometimes it's a new stitchery technique, a new quilting idea, or various other crafty ideas. In addition, each year the guild members work together on an in-club quilt which is raffled at the end of the year amongst only those who worked on it. flurline

Each September, members are always anxious to get to the guild to see what new ideas other members have come up with over the summer, and to see what the new program has to offer.

The guild has participated in various community activities including the St. Andrews Fall Fair, where it holds a large display of members work each year. It has also made quilts and donated them to community organizations for Fund raising purposes. We are constantly making baby quilts that usually get donated to the Childrens Aid Society, and hospital nurseries and lap robes that go to the various seniors nursing homes and many other charities.

We also have a lot of challenges amongst members in both Stitchery and quilting. Sometimes the challenges are done in conjunction with Quilts on the Rocks, and sometimes they are done with other guilds. A lot of nice work has been the result of these challenges. Everyone starts with a certain compulsory set of items, yet the results can be quite astounding depending on what else they are allowed to include.

Once in a while the guild organizes a bus trip to various areas, including the Mennonite Quilt Auction in Kitchener, and various trips down to Southern Ontario, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Vermont. One bus trip to Michigan was quite an extravaganza as 39 women managed to spend over $35.000.00 Canadian... In May 2002 a bus trip was organized by Marianne Bech and we went to a quilt show in Port Perry, Ontario. A fun time was had by all. We also have quite a few trips to the Creative Needlework Festival in Toronto, and a fun time is had by all.

The year always ends with the guild having a banquet where the members display their work, and guests are always welcome.

The guild also has an extensive library of needlecraft and quilting books available to the members at no cost. At one time, only a cart was needed, but that was quickly outgrown and now we have moved from three cupboards that we had built to the other end of the room where we have had to get some new ones built.

Membership into the guild is open to anyone over the age of 16, male or female, regardless of prior experience. The current membership fee is $30.00 a year now. The guild has always been a very busy place.

A few of our members have shops or services that provide invaluable assistance to the rest of the guild. Living in N.Ontario, we encourage members to support our local people.

  • The Country Quilter which is located in the little strip mall off Lansing Ave, behind Food Basics caters towards both the quilters and the stitchers, as Pat has a selection of fabrics, quilting books, stitchery patterns and all kinds of notions. Classes are even available. Pat can be reached at 705-524-6235 if you have any questions as to what is available.
  • Designs by Daintry This is a guild members' site with orignial designs by Daintry. Daintry has some wonderful stain glass patterns that some of you may find interesting, especially with the holiday season coming upon us.
  • Northern Pine Designs is a unique collection of stitchery patterns designed by one of our members. Linda is also an instructor and willing to share her expertise. She can be reached at 705-560-2919 to answer your questions.
  • Yesterdays Charmers on Ontario St. has a selection of smocking and silk ribbon supplies, and caters to heirloom sewing and collectible dolls. Ann can be reached at 705-671-9439 if you have any questions.
  • Carla Alexiuk, Jan Bailey and Catherine Sloan all do machine quilting on their longarm machines at home.
  • Nicolle Rautiainen runs Nicky's Nook Quilting Services and you can click on her name to email her if you have any questions.

With all the stuff available in our area, it is always nice when you can show some support to the guild members locally. They all help us make the guild what it is.

We have a lot of talented ladies in the guild, and I am sure there are a few that I haven't mentioned specifically... Contact me if you would like to be included on this list.

We are hoping that you enjoyed the tour of our guild. You may want
to bookmark our site and stop back for another visit sometime in the near future.

Once upon a time there were four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybodys' job,. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody didn't do it.
It ended up with Everybody blaming Somebody when, actually, Nobody could accuse Anybody!!
